Mergers and acquisitions are age-old strategies for growing the company or quieting the competition. The CFO is usually in the driver’s seat, with financial considerations guiding how the company proceeds. The rest of the organization is made up of supporting players. They are brought into the M&A deal room at various stages of the transaction to help make projections and consider how to bring the new company into the fold. If the decision-makers do not have good, quality data to rely on throughout the process and after, issues will occur. It is part of the reason so many M&A deals are not as successful as their proponents had hoped.
So, Master data management cannot be an afterthought in today’s M&A environment. Data is a key business asset. It needs to be managed properly and viewed as an important part of the organization’s strategy. This importance increases manifold in the case of a business transformation initiative such as an ERP implementation following an M&A deal.
